This article unveils the howlite meaning and how it can be used to lift one’s mood.
[toc]Howlite Meaning since Old Days
Howlite is a relatively recently discovered gemstone. As such it doesn’t come with a lasting historical or traditional value. Nevertheless, it’s often used as jewelry, in architecture, or as a regular, positive energy summoner. Henry How, a geologist from Canada discovered it.
The gemstone also holds its name after the famous geologist, who was also a mineralogist and chemist. Howlite was officially discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia. The gypsum quarry miners worked in the mines when they discovered something that didn’t look like their regular routine.
They went to the Canadian geologist who looked at it. After telling them that it seemed heavier and harder than the regular gypsum they mined, How concluded it’s an entirely new mineral.
Howlite is also known as a borate mineral. It’s most commonly available in Canada and some parts of the United States. What makes it different compared to other gemstones is that it has an irregular shape of its nodules, often reminding of the cauliflower head.
Not being available in a great environment makes it relatively rare. However, the rarest howlite of them all is the transparent crystals which are tiny in size. Different researchers pursued to find larger quantities of mined transparent howlite, although the largest one measured not larger than 1cm.
Nevertheless, the mass of the nodules can be extremely heavy as opposed to the size, ranging up to above 50 kilograms.
What does It Look Like
Howlite may seem difficult to recognize due to its white and marble-like texture, which often also resembles porcelain. It has a sub-vitreous luster.
Although it’s mostly appearing white in color, there are more than just that. Researchers discovered colors such as grey, greyish white or even black. On some rare occasions, there were also brown-like textures marking its surface.

Many jewelers also consider howlite the gemstone-like quality when it has a darker matrix also known as the dark brown-like veins inside or across it. However, the regular howlite is free of any matrixes and classified as pure white in color.
There’s another thing that can make it hard to tell whether the material is howlite or some other. Malicious jewelers and smugglers often like to paint it, as it’s easy to color. Then they present it as some other material. Its porous nature made it possible for people not to be able to tell between howlite and materials such as turquoise, red coral, lapis lazuli and others.
That’s why, if you’re springing for some of the mentioned materials, it’s important to be able to tell the difference or look for an honest trader who can declare whether it was treated. All those who want to buy it need to know that it takes the coloring well and can easily be thrown into.
The White Buffalo?
Because it’s often mistaken for other materials, people on the market have a habit to call it “white turquoise” as it’s most commonly mistaken for that material. Some other names also include “buffalo stone.” It’s worth noting it’s not related to any of the mentioned stones.
The fact it’s often colored doesn’t have to be bad, however. Many people who can’t afford materials like turquoise will look for a more affordable substitute. Blue howlite seems to be a great fit for that.
It’s also important to note that, despite being so good at absorbing color, howlite can be easily scratched. The inclusions bit is common because it’s extremely soft with Mohs hardness scale fixing it at around 3.5 Mohs. Despite being so soft, howlite is distinctly tough and often polished. That makes it great for brooches, polished stones, beads, carvings and more.
