A good highchair can transform mealtimes – allowing your baby to join in you at the table, and giving you a bit of time to sit back and enjoy your meal.

Studies published by the university of Iowa have also shown that putting your baby in a high chair and letting them eat with you can significantly speed up their development; boosting their motor skills, and also helping to improve their overall processing by engaging them in a new environment, and introducing them to a whole new perspective.

Best of all though? High chairs are comfortable, and every parent knows that a comfy baby is a happy baby. If you find that your little one is disruptive, irritable or disinterested during mealtimes, a good highchair with reclining functionality may well be all you need to get them engaged with their food again.

Best_Highchairs_engageSafety’s very important though; some types of highchair can be quite unstable and while most modern designs are built to withstand a good amount of rough-and-tumble, there’s no getting around the fact that certain models do pose something of a health risk.

And that makes choosing the right highchair really important. In this guide, we’ll walk you through all of the steps we’d take when picking a reliable highchair before highlighting some of our top picks.

Best Highchairs Buying Guide

Longstanding experience has taught us that there are a few key things to consider when it comes to picking a perfect product. In particular, we’d always look for a chair that offers:

Plenty of stability

It might seem like a no-brainer, but making sure that a highchair is nice and stable should always come first.

As we mentioned above, top-heavy models with thin or spindly legs can be rocked over by a boisterous child, and models with flimsy plastic parts will eventually succumb to the everyday wear-and-tear they are subjected to.

As a result, we’d always recommend taking the time to pick out a robust highchair with a stable base, and a design that prioritizes stability.

A good harness

This is essential if you want to be able to relax, and stop worrying about your baby’s safety. We’d always recommend looking for models with a secure 3 or 5 point harness. Preferably one that’s nice and easy to adjust too, given the speed with which babies tend to grow.

A dependable harness is particularly important if you want to start using your high-chair around the 4-6 month mark.

At this age babies lack the coordination and fine muscle control needed to ensure that they don’t accidentally fall out of the chair, and the last thing that you want is to watch your little one taking a nasty tumble when they’re meant to be enjoying their food!

Easy to clean and maintain

High chairs get messy. No matter how well behaved your baby tends to be, they will smear food on the seat, the table and (in all likelihood) the legs at some point.

To ensure that you’re not up all night scrubbing stains out of your chair, we’d recommend limiting your search to models that make use of modern, easy clean fabrics. Wipe-clean or machine washable covers are a big plus, as are models with fully-removable covers.

Metal or plastic structural elements are another thing we always try to look out for.

As tempting as it is to opt for wood, the truth of the matter is that wooden high chairs are much harder to maintain, and there’s no getting around the fact that they don’t have the same lifespan as their more modern counterpoints.

Multiple seating positions

As mentioned above, making sure your child can sit comfortably is the key to helping them enjoy meal times. To this end, we’d always recommend picking a high chair that provides multiple sitting or reclining positions. This is doubly true if you have a particularly picky baby that has to be sat just-so before they’ll engage with their food.

Nowadays, most good high chairs are also very adaptable; allowing you to take apart the main frame to provide you with a seat that lets your baby put their feet down flat on the floor when they’re not at the table, or even breaking up to provide a mini table and chair set for toddlers.

This is great if you’re looking for a long-term investment that’ll grow with your child, and it’s definitely worth considering options that offer this kind of functionality if you’re keen to prioritize your little one’s growth and development.

Plenty of comfort

Padding is another important consideration: Cheap, mass-produced high chairs often made of hard plastic or wood with a very thin cushion, and while chairs , it’s unlikely that your baby will enjoy eating in them.

For this reason, we’d always recommend picking a high chair that provides plenty of padding for your baby – whether it’s all on the actual seat, or surrounding the chair in its entirety to provide extra support, the important thing is to make sure that it’s plush, and has plenty of give so that your baby is well supported.

We think it’s important to pick a chair that fits with the aesthetics of your home too. It might not be a top priority, but it’s worth remembering that your high chair will probably be on display 90% of the time, so it is worth selecting something that you’re happy to look at every day.

Evenflo Convertible Highchair

There’s a lot to love about Evenflo’s convertible highchair: its splayed-leg design makes it incredibly stable, the padded seat seems to be very comfortable and bold, cheerful colors make it a nice, inviting place for your little one to sit and eat.

Evenflo Convertible High Chair

  • Unique, 3-in-1 design allows it to be turned into a separate chair and table set
  • Sturdy frame
  • Robust construction
  • 3-5 point harness

Better yet, the chair can be transformed into three different items: A highchair, a ‘my time’ chair that’s short enough to let your children put their feet firmly on the floor, and a chair and table set for little monsters that want their own space to draw, eat or play.

 Easy to use

All of this extra functionality is very accessibility too: You might expect things like the mid-section to be quite stiff, or difficult to detach from the rest of the unit but the truth is that Evenflo have taken great care to ensure that everything fits together very neatly, and we found it really easy to switch the chair between its different configurations.

It’s a very easy chair to maintain too: there are, of course, a few little nooks and crannies that food tends to fall into, but generally speaking we found it very easy to clean up any unpleasant spills, and things like the dining tray are dishwasher safe too, which means clean-up is quick and simple.

Evenflo Convertible High Chair- parts

 Lightweight Design

It’s nice and easy to move this chair around too; despite its sturdy shape and robust frame, it’s relatively lightweight which means that you won’t be caught lugging it across the kitchen floor after your little one has finished their meal, and you want to put the kitchen back to normal.

A good set of shoulder-straps and a removable cover help to round-out the offering – making sure that your little one is nice and safe while they’re using the chair in any of its 3 configurations, and stopping any particularly nasty stains from turning into a huge headache.

 What about the cons?

There are a couple of things we didn’t like about this chair though. For one, the seat doesn’t have the plethora of reclining positions available in other options on today’s market. This means that, if your child doesn’t find the preset seating angle all that comfortable, you may struggle to make the chair work for them.

The seat isn’t the most comfortable either. It’s certainly more plush than we’d have expected at this price point, but the padding does tend to slide about quite freely, and this can leave your baby perched at odd angles sometimes.

Other reviewers have also noted that the seat itself is quite small, which means that your little one might outgrow the seat before they’ve finished using it as a separate table and chair set, or enjoying the ‘my-time’ functionality.

 Bottom line

All in all though, it’s fair to say that the Evenflo Convertible Highchair offers great value for money. It’s incredibly versatile, it’s very easy to maintain and it offers a great way to get your little one involved during mealtimes. It’s also surprisingly robust and very durable, which is a big plus if you’re keen to get the most for your money.

  • A trustworthy and reliable highchair that offers plenty of innate stability
  • Great for parents who want a highchair that will grow with their child
  • Nice and easy to maintain

  • One-size-fits-all approach means less options than other, comparable models
  • The seat is quite small, which may limit the chair’s usable lifetime
  • Padding does tend to slide around, which may irritate some children

Graco Blossom 6-in-1 Highchair

Graco’s Blossom highchair is definitely a premium option – the plush cushioning on the base, the robust, aluminum frame and the super-stable, wrap-around base all work together to make the product look and feel like an incredibly luxurious addition to your kitchen, and there really isn’t a more stable option out there.

Graco Blossom 6-in-1 Convertible High Chair

  • Unique 4-in-1 design
  • Castor-style wheels
  • 3 or 5 point harness
  • Removable booster seat

The seat covers are very easy to keep clean too. Idle boasts of easy-wipe fabrics are two-a-penny when it comes to baby products, but we’re pleased to report that the covers on the blossom really can be cleaned off in one or two wipes, and they’re surprisingly stain-resistant too.

 4 seats in 1

Considerations of build quality and ease-of-use aside, it’s also worth noting that the Graco Blossom is incredibly versatile. In ‘highchair’ mode, the seat boasts 6 different height settings, and three different angles of recline.

The chair section can be lifted right off the legs too; providing you with a comfortable booster seat that’s perfect for little toddlers. Coupled with the small ‘youth seat’ that’s designed to act as a booster for older children, this extra functionality basically means you’re buying four seats for the price of one, which is great news for those of us looking for a long-term investment.

The youth seat and booster functionality also mean that you can technically use a single Graco blossom to seat two different children, particularly if one of them is slightly older, and fits the height requirements for the booster segment. This makes the Blossom a really good choice for big families, or forward-thinking parents.

Graco Blossom High Chair - family Intelligent Design

The Blossom also features a set of really handy little wheels at the front and back of the base. Although they’re rarely mentioned in reviews or write-ups, we actually found these wheels very useful, as they make moving the chair to and from the table a real breeze.

Wheels also help to make up for the chair’s weight – which is slightly higher than other, comparable highchairs, and the lack of folding functionality. They make it easy to store the chair out of the way, and help to make life that little bit easier for those of us without a huge kitchen.

It’s this kind of attention to detail that makes the Blossom such a joy to use. Coupled with little extras like a dining tray that’s designed to be removed with one hand, they make it hard to overstate the convenience that this one-of-a-kind highchair provides, and we’d be hard pressed to recommend a more versatile product.

Graco Blossom High Chair - side Things we didn’t like

In terms of flaws, there are really only two things to highlight here: Firstly, it’s worth noting that this chair is positioned at a premium price point. This isn’t necessarily a ‘con’ in its own right, but it is worth remembering that there are cheaper options out there if you’re on a tight budget.

Secondly, the 5-point harness can be very finicky, especially when you’re trying to feed the straps through the seat covers or make a significant adjustment. If you opt for the Blossom, we’d recommend sticking to the three point harness once your child is large enough to meet the minimum height requirements, as it’s much easier to manage this system.

 Bottom line

Those concerns aside, the blossom is a top-notch highchair. It’s a testament to Graco’s engineering prowess, and a great example of a versatile modern high chair – perfect for parents with more than one child, or parents who want a high chair that will grow with their child.

Graco Blossom High Chair - upper part

  • Incredibly comfortable, and easy to adjust to suit little one’s preferences.
  • Easy to keep clean and maintain
  • Provides you with plenty of different options

  • Heavier, and more cumbersome than some of the slim-line highchairs on today’s market
  • Situated at a premium price point
  • Harness is fiddly.

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair

If you’re looking for a compact, easy-to-use highchair that’s built for small homes, Fisher-Price’s Space Saver is probably the ideal choice.

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair

  • Compact, space-saving design
  • Removable seat covers
  • Food-safe dining tray with cupholder
  • 3 recline settings & 2 height settings

Unlike the rest of the highchairs on our list, this model is actually designed to fit on a standard dining chair; letting you transform preexisting furniture into a special highchair that will help your baby join you at the meal table.

Despite its small size, we found that this seat offered a better level of comfort than most full-sized chairs; it’s got plenty of soft, pliable cushioning around the areas that your baby will come into contact with on a day-to-day basis, and it also boasts a removable insert to accommodate smaller babies.

 3 levels of recline

The seat has three built-in levels of recline too. This means that you’ll be able to adjust it to accommodate your baby.

As mentioned above, this is super important if you want your baby to relax and enjoy their food, and we found that finding the perfect angle really is key to getting your baby settle down and participate mealtimes.

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair-positionsWe were pleased to find that the seat had two different height options too, allowing you to move it up and down as your little one grows.

 Lots of extra features

We mentioned the infant insert above, but it’s also good to note that the SpaceSaver has lots of little extras and QOL (quality of life) improvements. This includes a built-in cup-holder, which is great if you have a messy child who likes to spill their drink all over the tray, plus a useful little handle designed to hold towels, clothes or other handy items that you find yourself reaching for during lunch.

The SpaceSaver’s a really attractive little seat too; its flared base, curved back and smooth, bucket-shaped seat lend it a sleek and sophisticated outline, and the soft-touch covers come in a range of pleasing designs.

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair-installed Things we didn’t like

The only slight downsides are the general fit of the seat cushion, and the size of the actual seat. Our main issue with the seat cushion is that the cover sits at just the right angle for food to fall down the side of the cushion, which means that it can be a bit of a faff to clean.

This isn’t the biggest problem in the world though, as the whole seat cover can be removed and machine-washed

The issue with the actual size of the seat is a little more problematic though: It’s obvious that Fisher-Price have tried to make this highchair as compact as they possible can, and while this is great for those of us with very limited space, it does also mean that the actual seat is very small.

This isn’t an issue at all if your child is in the 4-6 month bracket, and looking at the seat we are confident that it’d fit most babies. Bigger children will fill it out quite fast though, and we’re not sure that it’d really be usable in its ‘booster mode’ which is designed for toddlers.

Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair-feature Bottom line

That said, if you’re looking for a comfy, compact seat that will let you turn your dining chair into a highchair, you won’t find a better option. The SpaceSaver is small enough to fit in a cupboard when it’s not in use, and it’s also a really comfortable, versatile option for little ones in the 4-12 month bracket.

  • Unique design lets you convert a dining chair into a highchair
  • Small enough to fit in a cupboard, but comfy enough to let your little one join you at the table on a regular basis
  • Easy to set-up and adjust

  • Can be difficult to clean
  • Larger children may outgrow the seat quite quickly
  • Some parents report that the clips and other plastic components are prone to snapping

Abiie Beyond Wooden Highchair

It flies in the face of our advice to shop for modern, metal or plastic highchairs but there’s an exception to every rule, and Abiie ’s Beyond Wooden Highchair is simply too good to leave off this list of our top 5 highchairs.

Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair

  • Removable, dishwasher-safe food tray
  • Easy-clean cushion
  • Patented EZ-Seat adjustment mechanism
  • Pressure-treated wooden frame

This sleek and sophisticated highchair boasts a very attractive frame that’s built from eco-friendly, European Beech and a super soft cushion that will keep your little one comfy for hours at a time.

We’re a big fan of the overall aesthetic, and we’re also really sold on the versatility of the unit, which offers some really unique adjustment options. The strength and stability of the Beyond are on a par with premium metal options too, so you don’t need to worry about your child’s safety.

Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair - fitting Unique EZ-Seat functionality

As mentioned above, one of the best things about the Beyond is its patented adjustment mechanism. The seat base is designed to slide out with the push of a single button, and you can then re-position it to sit in one of many carved grooves in the seat’s legs.

This allows you raise or lower the cushion in about 20 seconds (and yes, we did time ourselves doing it just to make sure); transforming the whole unit from high chair to toddler-friendly seat in less time than it takes to brew a pot of coffee.

The whole system is incredibly easy to use, and you don’t need any tools either. There are plenty of different height options too, which means that you can actually use the chair from the 6 month mark, right through to age 7.

Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair - EZ Safe and easy to clean

We’re also a big fan of the fact that Abiie have built the chair to work with either a 3- or 5-point harness, giving you plenty of options, and making sure that your child is kept nice and safe no matter their size.

According to the instruction manual, the whole thing has also been treated using a unique pressurizing process that makes it very resistant to bacteria. This means that you can simply wipe the whole thing down after a messy meal, and that the chair has a very long lifespan despite its wooden frame.

Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair - seat The cons

The only thing we didn’t love about this chair was the lack of extra cushioning around the headrest. There’s more than enough to keep most babies safe, but if your little-one is taller than average, you might find that their head lines up with the top of the headrest, and we’d be concerned that they might hurt themselves if they were to move their head back suddenly.

This is easy enough to remedy with a folded towel or similar, but it is worth bearing in mind before you buy.

Some parents do also report the plastic screws that secure the seat shearing off after very heavy use.

Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair - life Bottom line

All in all though, the Beyond is an ideal choice for anyone that wants a chair that’s capable of growing with their child, and it’s a great fit for anyone that’s concerned about the aesthetics of a modern, plastic chair too.

  • Durable, sturdy and long-lasting wooden high chair
  • Very versatile design that allows the chair to grow with your child
  • Aesthetically-pleasing design.

  • Could provide more padding at the top of the headboard
  • Plastic parts are prone to snapping, although this is the same on all highchairs
  • Relatively high price point may put this highchair out of reach for parents on a tight budget

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair

If you’re looking for a no-nonsense chair without the frills, Cosco’s Simple Fold Highchair is a solid choice for anyone shopping on a tight budget.

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair

  • Dishwasher-safe food tray
  • Wipe-clean fabric cushioning
  • Unique folding functionality
  • Sturdy, 3-point harness
This fantastically simple high chair might not boast an exhaustive list of special features, but it has got a comfy, wipe-clean seat, a dishwasher-safe tray and a set of sturdy metal legs that’ll bring your baby to the table, and let him enjoy meal times with the whole family.

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair - clean Comfort and Stability

The Simple Fold is also surprisingly comfortable for such an affordable option – offplenty of padding for your baby’s back and bum.

While we were putting this highchair through its paces, we did also find that it offered plenty of stability and support – even with a baby shuffling about and bouncing around, there was barely a wobble and the back kept our little one up in a good position.

A robust, 3-point harness helps to keep the occupant nice and secure too, and we have to say that we were very impressed with the overall fit and comfort level considering the low price-point.

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair - harness Light-weight, Folding Design

It’s the light weight and folding capability that really makes this chair shine though: The whole thing’s built around a robust, folding hinge and it’s designed to collapse in a matter of seconds.

This makes it a perfect choice for those of us that like to tuck our high chairs away when they’re not in use, and it’s great if you travel a lot too.

The folding functionality is nice and safe as well – there’s no need to worry about the chair collapsing of its own accord, and we found the locking mechanism very simple to set up and use.

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair - Fold Things we didn’t like

Of course, at such a low price point you won’t enjoy any of the adaptable options found in other models; there’s only one reclining position, and the seat can’t be taken apart to act as a toddler chair or a booster seat either which might be an issue for parents that want a chair that’ll grow with their baby.

It’s also worth noting that cover is sewn on, which means that you’ll be limited to spot cleaning with warm water and a gentle soap.

We noticed that the buckles on this chair were really stiff too, and while this might seem like a relatively minor point to raise, it can be frustrating to have to struggle every time you need to take your baby out of the harness.

Cosco Simple Fold High Chair - side Bottom line

That said, Cosco’s Simple Fold Highchair is a great option for anyone that wants something simple and straightforward. It’s also a perfect match for parents that are on the go a lot, and we’d be comfortable recommending it to anyone that wants a lightweight and affordable highchair.

  • Easy to set-up, use and fold away, making it great for parents who travel a lot, or houses without much space to leave a highchair standing
  • Affordable option, at a very reasonable price-point
  • Attractive, low-profile styling

  • Doesn’t have any of the adaptable functionality found in other models
  • Buckles and clips can be quite stiff
  • There are options with better reclining functionality and a more comfortable seat
